Mapping & IMAP for Utility Members

Accurate mapping is the foundation of Missouri 811’s notification system.

Missouri 811 uses mapping coverage areas, defined by each utility member, to determine when locate notifications should be transmitted. If your mapping data is incomplete or incorrect, you may not receive tickets affecting your underground facilities.

This page explains how mapping works, how to manage your coverage area in IMAP, and your annual verification responsibilities.

What Is IMAP?

IMAP is Missouri 811’s online mapping application.

Each utility member is assigned a district code tied to their mapping database. Through IMAP, members create and manage coverage polygons that represent the geographic areas where their underground facilities are located.

When an excavator submits a locate request, Missouri 811 compares the dig site polygon to member coverage polygons. If the areas overlap or touch, a locate notification is transmitted.

IMAP access is provided to the designated Mapping/GIS Contact on file.

Defining Your Coverage Area

Utility members must create one or more polygons in IMAP that accurately represent their service territory or underground facility footprint.

These polygons determine when your organization is notified of excavation activity. Overly broad polygons may generate unnecessary tickets. Incomplete polygons may result in missed notifications.

Mapping data should reflect actual ownership and operational responsibility, not service agreements with other utilities.

Adding or Removing Assets

When underground facilities are expanded, removed, sold, or otherwise modified, mapping updates must be completed promptly.

Failure to update coverage areas can result in misrouted notifications and increased risk of damage.

Annual Mapping Verification Requirement

Utility members are required to review and verify their mapping database annually.

A reminder letter is sent to the Mapping/GIS Contact on file. Members are responsible for reviewing their coverage polygons, confirming contact accuracy, and submitting any necessary corrections before the requested deadline.

Annual verification helps ensure that locate notifications are routed correctly and that underground facilities remain protected.

Mapping Transfers During Utility Acquisitions

If a utility is purchased and the mapping database will transfer to a new owner, documented authorization must be provided to Missouri 811.

The new owner must review and approve the mapping database under their ownership before it becomes active.

Mapping accuracy during ownership transitions is critical to preventing missed notifications and compliance issues.

Maintaining Mapping Accuracy

Mapping data is not static. Service areas change, infrastructure expands, and ownership evolves.

Utility members should periodically review their IMAP coverage areas to confirm that polygons accurately reflect current infrastructure. Proactive updates reduce unnecessary ticket volume and minimize exposure to missed notifications.
