RESPONSIBILITIES OF Excavators
Missouri law requires excavators to provide two working days’ notice, beginning at 12:00 a.m. the day after the locate request is submitted.
For clarity, Missouri 811 commonly refers to this as a 3 working day notification period.
Note: Working days do not include weekends or Missouri State holidays.
An excavation Ticket Life is valid for 21 consecutive calendar days from the start date and time listed on the locate request. If work must continue beyond the ticket expiration date, or the markings become unclear, a Renewal Ticket must be requested by the excavator.
Timeline
For digging projects big or small, you need to contact Missouri 811 at least 3 working days before you start digging.

Dig With Care
Digging may begin if all utilities have responded. If all utilities have not responded, you may submit a “No Response” ticket.

Utilities must respond by the start date/time listed on the locate request.
Checking Ticket Status is as easy as 1-2-3!
The ticketing system will email you snapshot of your locate request and the utilities to be notified. As utilities change their status, you will receive updated email(s). These emails also contain your ticket number, which is a live link that will allow you to view the current status of all notified utilities.

Either log in (if you have a username and password) or click the Search button in the top right.
Enter the ticket number at top of the screen.
Scroll to the “Members Notified” section to check the status for each utility notified.
No Response Tickets
To be requested when one or more utilities fail to respond to the original locate request. If notification is made before 2 pm, the marking shall be completed that working day. If the notification is made after 2 pm, the marking is to be completed no later than 10 am the next working day.
Missouri law requires the use of the Common Ground Alliance Best Practices as a guide to help protect the underground utilities. You can find the latest version of the CGA Best Practices under the Law & Enforcement tab on missouri-811.org.
Keep in mind that Missouri law takes priority over the CGA guide. If the two differ, follow Missouri law. For example, the CGA defines the tolerance zone as the width of the facility plus 18 inches on either side of the outside edge of an underground utility, but Missouri law uses 24 inches, and therefore, 24 inches is enforced in Missouri. When in doubt, always follow state law.
